New Codes Implemented October 1, 2024:
Code Assignment for Describing E66.81, Obesity class:
- E66.811, Obesity, class 1 (BMI of 30–34.9 kg/m², considered low risk)
- E66.812, Obesity, class 2 (BMI of 35–39.9 kg/m², considered moderate risk)
- E66.813, Obesity, class 3 (BMI of 40 kg/m² or higher, considered high risk and also known as severe)
- E66.89, Other obesity not elsewhere classified
Per Coding Clinic 4Q 2018, page 77:
Obesity and morbid obesity are always clinically significant and reportable when documented by the provider. In addition, if documented, the BMI code may also be coded in addition to the obesity or morbid obesity code.
