Lesson on Ventricular Assist Devices

Devices Include:

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD):

Most common type. Surgically implanted in the heart and takes over the work of the left ventricle, one of the heart’s two lower chambers.

Right ventricular assist device (RVAD):

Pumps blood from your right ventricle (or atrium) into your pulmonary artery and to the lungs.

Biventricular assist device (bi-VAD):

LVAD and RVAD used together to help your heart function better when both the right and left pumping chambers of your heart are failing.

Intraaortic balloon pump (IABP):

IABPs provide less hemodynamic support compared to the Impella, TandemHeart, and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) devices.
