Esophagogastric Junction Outflow Obstruction
Per Coding Clinic, Second Quarter 2024:
Definition: An EGJOO is a motility disorder, which involves incomplete relaxation at the esophagogastric junction and poor peristalsis, as well as a physiologic barrier preventing outflow.
Code Example: A patient diagnosed with esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EGJOO) presented for upper endoscopy and Endoflip™ study.
Code Assignment:
K22.89: Other specified diseases of esophagus.
K31.89: Other diseases of stomach and duodenum, for an EGJOO.
Note: Both codes are assigned to fully capture the condition because ICD-10-CM does not provide a specific code for EGJOO. In this case, code K22.2, Esophageal obstruction, is NOT appropriate since the condition does not involve a true obstruction.
