Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease
Per Coding Clinic, Second Quarter 2024:
A patient with Parkinson’s disease presents for stage II deep brain stimulation system implantation (generator implantation and lead attachment). The patient is status post stage I of the procedure in which the deep brain stimulator lead was implanted in the brain for later attachment to the extension connector and the generator. During surgery, a pocket was made at the pectoralis muscle. An incision was made behind the ear and tunneled to a subclavicular incision. The previously inserted lead was externalized, attached to the extension connector, and passed through subcutaneous tunneling tubes to be brought out at the subclavicular incision. The wire was then coiled deep to the implantable pulse generator and the generator was placed in the subpectoralis pocket.
ICD-10-PCS code assignment:
0JHS3YZ: Insertion of other device into head and neck subcutaneous tissue and fascia, percutaneous approach, for placement of the extension wire. This is a separate device that connects the deep brain stimulator lead to the generator.
