Complication Comorbidity Update

Examples Include:

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) codes, Z59.00.

Homelessness unspecified, Z59.01.

Sheltered homelessness and Z59.02, Unsheltered homelessness will be considered CC’s (complication/comorbidity) beginning with October 1, 2023 discharges.

CMS based these changes on the higher average resource costs of cases with these codes in comparison to similar cases without these codes. CMS will continue to analyze the effects of SDOH on severity of illness, complexity of service and consumption of resources.
