Polyneuropathy due to prediabetes evidenced by abnormal gait, increased sensitivity to pain in left upper extremity and left lower extremity.

What are the correct ICD-10-CM code assignments for polyneuropathy due to prediabetes?

Per 3Q 2024 Coding Clinic:

Assign code G62.89, Other specified polyneuropathies, for polyneuropathy due to prediabetes and R73.03, Prediabetes, for the prediabetes.

Code G63, Polyneuropathy in diseases classified elsewhere, is a manifestation code. As part of the etiology/manifestation convention, this code must be used in conjunction with and sequenced following the underlying condition.

Prediabetes, an elevated or impaired fasting glucose without the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, is classified to Chapter 18, Signs and Abnormal Findings; therefore, code G63 would not be appropriate in this scenario.
