Hill-Sachs and Bankart Lesion
Per Coding Clinic, Second Quarter 2024:
Definition: Hill-Sachs lesions, also known as Hill-Sachs defects, are posterolateral humeral head depression fractures that occur secondary to an anterior shoulder dislocation. The fracture is displaced because of a hole in the bone. The bone is compressed in or compacted down, which is a type of displacement.
Code Example: A patient was admitted for surgical correction of a left bony Bankart lesion and Hill-Sachs lesion following a recent snowboarding accident.
Code Assignment:
S43.432A: Superior glenoid labrum lesion of left shoulder, initial encounter, for the Bankart lesion.
S42.292A: Other displaced fracture of upper end of left humerus, initial encounter, for closed fracture for the Hill Sachs lesion.
